First published in 1875, 'The Sin of Father Amaro' is a landmark of Portuguese realism and a sharp critique of clerical hypocrisy. Set in a provincial town, the novel follows a young priest whose illicit relationship exposes the moral corruption and social repression of the Church and bourgeois society. Banned and condemned on publication, it remains one of Eça de Queiroz’s most influential and controversial works.
